The approach

In real estate the agent is the brand, and Christopher Hysell arrived with a clear picture of how he wanted that brand to look. When a client can already visualise the result, the work is not about generating ideas. It is about listening precisely and executing without compromise.

The site’s job is narrow on purpose. It carries no listings and makes no attempt to be a search portal. It sells the person: a California-licensed agent who positions himself as a marketer first, and whose whole argument is that most homes are undersold because nobody ever treated the listing as something to be marketed. Photography, drone work, virtual tours, film and per-property sites are the case he makes, which means the page itself has to hold the standard he is promising. Restraint does more of that work than decoration would.

The narrowness only works because the site is part of a set. Hysell runs several domains, each pointed at a different search and a different reader: this one for the agent, a separate site for buyers and sellers looking at inventory, another for the media production side of the business, and a town-specific site for Glendora that is a separate case study here. Splitting them means no page has to be four things at once, and the footer links them all so anybody who landed on the wrong one is a click from the right one.

Real estate is also a licensed trade, and the site carries the furniture that comes with that: the licence number, the affiliated brokerage, an equal housing notice, a listing accuracy disclaimer, and a route for anybody who needs help reaching the information. None of it sells. All of it has to be there, and where it sits is a design decision rather than an afterthought.

The measure of success was always going to be simple. Did the finished site match the picture he walked in with. In his words, the team understood the look he was going for and completely nailed it.

By far the best team I have ever worked with. They understood the look I was going for and completely nailed it.
